For TBA, Whoop Dee Doo will work with students during the summer at PICA and Caldera (a year-round arts mentoring organization that works in Portland and Central Oregon) to create a new, large-scale installation and live community performance. Participating students will sketch, plan, and create several aspects of the exhibition and live show.
Whoop Dee Doo is a non-profit community project led by artists living and working in Kansas City, Missouri. The group has created commissioned projects for organizations including the Bemis Center for contemporary Arts (Omaha), Deitch Projects (New York), the Smart Museum (Chicago), The Kemper Museum for Contemporary Arts (Kansas City), Loyal Gallery (Sweden), and others.
This "hair show with song and dance" features burlesque and cabaret performances with lots of fancy hairstyles. Performers include the Charleens, Lana Louche, Hai Fleish, and MC Lucynda Thompson, and the show benefits S.E.L.F., a nonprofit helping children with same-sex parents or who identify as the opposite gender.
This annual dance showcase features jazz and tap and production numbers by legendary local tap master Sally Mack. (Mrs. Mack has been training tappers for stages in Hollywood and Portland since 1960.) Sally's students and teachers by the dozens will perform on the main stage at MHCC. The production numbers this year are from the 1933 Bacon/Berkeley-directed 42nd Street, as well as a brand new piece by Mrs. Mack entitled Chaplin. Charleen no. 2, Sara Sullivan, is proud to be hoofing it in this fabulous tribute to the great English comic actor Charlie Chaplin.
